If you’re thinking about investing in orthodontic treatment for you or your child, you have lots of options. Many orthodontists — including us — offer a complimentary consultation to discuss treatment options, financing and any other questions you have. Here are 10 questions to get answered during that first appointment.
1. What treatment options are available?
During your first appointment, we’ll talk about the different types of treatment we offer and which alternatives will be best for you, considering your particular orthodontic needs. You’ll be able to compare the treatments in terms of price, approximate length of treatment and lifestyle.
2. Which treatment option will be most effective?
That depends upon several factors related to your orthodontic diagnosis. Many people seek out Invisalign treatment because the clear aligners are not noticeable and there are no restrictions on the foods you can eat, but the most complex cases may benefit from metal or ceramic braces.
3. Will headgear be necessary?
Unless your issue is very severe, usually the answer is no. Even if headgear is required, you will usually only have to wear it at night. Other treatments have advanced to a degree that headgear is not used nearly as commonly as it once was.
4. Will getting braces hurt?
There may be some temporary discomfort or irritation when braces or an appliance are first placed, but that will quickly resolve.
5. How often will I see the orthodontist?
As part of your treatment plan, we’ll want to see you every few weeks during treatment. The frequency varies depending on your case’s complexity and the treatment option you choose.
6. How long will treatment last?
Again, this varies somewhat based on the extent of orthodontics needed and the treatment option you choose. Generally, treatment is completed within one to two years. Some young children benefit from two treatment phases.
7. How much does treatment cost?
Your total cost of treatment will depend on several factors, including the severity of your case and the type of treatment you choose. We offer many payment options to fit your needs and budget and will review them all at your appointment.
8. Are there specific foods to avoid?
Invisalign trays are removable, so there is no need to avoid any particular foods. However, if you get traditional braces, we’ll give you a list of foods to avoid.
9. Can I continue my usual activities?
Yes. Traditional braces can make it more difficult to play some musical instruments, but we’ll talk with you about that during your appointment.
10. How will the treatment benefit me?
Apart from correcting malocclusion and other oral issues, orthodontic treatment has cosmetic benefits and may help boost your self-confidence. In addition, straight teeth are easier to keep clean, helping you avoid gum disease that can be linked to other negative long-term health effects.
